Welcome to the STAR Project

The STAR Project is a joint effort by the Psychology and Human Development and Family Studies departments at UNCG to learn more about preschool children and their transition into kindergarten. As you can see above, S.T.A.R. stands for School Transition and Academic Readiness. The goal of the project is to gain a better understanding of the connections between emotional and mental development and how both feeling and thinking abilities affect children's performance in kindergarten.

We are asking questions such as:

  • How do emotions and the mind work together?
  • How does this change as children develop?
  • How do emotional and mental abilities help children in a successful transition into kindergarten?

To answer these questions, we turned to families who were willing to help. All families who are participating in the study began when their child was 3½ years old and will visit us again when their child is 4½ and 5 years old. It is important to see the children each year so we can gain a better understanding of their transition from preschool to kindergarten.

Feel free to look around our website using the links on the left to learn more about the STAR Project. We are very excited about STAR and hope you are too. Please contact us if you have any questions or are ready to schedule your 4½ year visit. Thanks to all who are participating.
